Ruto Pledges Shade for Fans: Nyayo Stadium to Get Canopy Starting January 2026
The announcement was made during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations held at the same venue on Friday, December 12, 2025.
Addressing attendees, President Ruto said the initiative follows the successful installation of a similar canopy at Kasarani Stadium earlier in the year in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship.
He noted that the project forms part of broader efforts to modernise Kenya’s sports infrastructure and ensure world-class standards in stadium facilities across the country.
“Nyayo Stadium will now offer protection from the harsh sun, ensuring that Kenyans attending events here can do so comfortably. This will be the last time citizens are exposed to scorching sunlight at this stadium,” the President said, emphasising the government’s commitment to elevating the stadium experience.
Nyayo Stadium, an 18,000-seater multipurpose venue built in 1983 with an original capacity of 30,000, has long hosted major national and international sporting events.
The planned canopy is expected to not only improve comfort for spectators but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the stadium.
This upgrade aligns with global best practices for stadium design, ensuring fans enjoy modern, safe, and comfortable facilities.
The canopy installation will also complement ongoing government investments in sports infrastructure aimed at nurturing local talent and positioning Kenya as a preferred host for continental and international competitions.
“Our focus is to create venues that support athletes, attract fans, and meet international standards for major sporting events,” President Ruto said.
The canopy will protect spectators from extreme weather conditions, particularly the intense sun that has previously made attendance at large gatherings challenging.
It will also improve the overall fan experience, encouraging higher turnout for sports events, national celebrations, and other large-scale activities held at the stadium.
In addition to the canopy project, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading sports facilities nationwide.
The announcement comes alongside the news that the under-construction Talanta Stadium will be named after the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga upon completion in 2026, reflecting Kenya’s efforts to honor national leaders while developing modern public infrastructure.
Construction of the Nyayo Stadium canopy is set to begin in January 2026, and sports enthusiasts can look forward to a more comfortable and modern venue in time for upcoming national events.
The project demonstrates the government’s recognition of sports as a key driver of national unity, youth engagement, and international recognition.
“The canopy is just one of several steps we are taking to modernise our stadiums, ensure safety, and create memorable experiences for our citizens. We want Kenya’s sports facilities to be on par with the best in the world,” President Ruto added.
