WATCH: What Edwin Sifuna Was Seen Doing as Winnie Odinga Warned Oburu Has Kenyans Talking Online

A video circulating online has captured a striking moment during the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) 20th anniversary celebrations.

Showing Edwin Sifuna, the party’s Secretary-General, visibly jumping and celebrating on a podium as Winnie Odinga addressed the crowd.

The clip has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many Kenyans debating what the display signifies about the party’s internal dynamics.

Winnie Odinga spoke on November 14, 2025, at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.

She warned Oburu Odinga and other party leaders that the ODM must allow its members to elect a leader who will represent the party in a broad-based government.

She emphasized that leadership decisions should reflect the will of the grassroots rather than be determined by backroom deals.

Winnie noted that ODM was built through resistance and protest, and she urged young party members to uphold the founding principles laid down by her late father, Raila Odinga.

She also criticized political brokers who she said were trying to influence the party’s direction for personal gain, stressing the need for transparency and unity.

Sifuna’s animated reaction in the video has drawn strong reactions online.

Many Kenyans described the moment as theatrical, questioning whether the party’s focus on policy and results matches the dramatic public display.

Others interpreted Sifuna’s celebration as a signal that his faction of the party sees itself gaining influence, interpreting Winnie’s speech as indirectly supporting his wing.

Critics also noted that the viral footage seemed to overshadow the seriousness of Winnie Odinga’s call for internal democracy and grassroots legitimacy.

The ODM 20th anniversary celebration comes at a critical time for the party following the death of Raila Odinga.

The party is currently navigating leadership succession and deciding how to engage with President William Ruto’s broad-based government.

Winnie Odinga’s call for a National Delegates Convention to elect leaders is seen as a step to ensure the party reflects the choice of its members rather than a few individuals at the top.
